What happens after cheat day? How diet is affecting your mental health.

Your brain on food –

It’s no secret that eating a healthy, balanced food diet possesses undeniable health benefits, but what about beyond just the physical body? When looking inward towards our mental health, where can we see the food-mood connection?

So what happens after cheat day? – Foods

Aside from elevated heart rate, inflammation, sluggishness and energy loss- theres a lot going on on the inside and in our brains.

Learn about seven foods that might help increase serotonin levels.

  • Eggs.
  • Salmon.
  • Nuts and seeds.
  • Pineapple
  • Tofu
  • Cheese
  • Turkey

How do these foods increase serotonin levels? All of these foods have at least one common molecule; tryptophan. The essential amino acid works to biosynthesize proteins.

Eating these foods in regularly and often is one way to cross ‘self-care’ off the checklist for the day. While high-tryptophan foods won’t boost serotonin on their own, there’s one possible cheat to this system: carbs.

Carbs cause the body to release more insulin, which promotes amino acid absorption and leaves tryptophan in the blood. If you mix high-tryptophan foods with carbs, you might get a serotonin boost.

Your Gut

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that helps regulate sleep and appetite, mediate moods, and inhibit pain. Since about 95% of your serotonin is produced in your gastrointestinal tract, and your gastrointestinal tract is lined with a hundred million nerve cells, or neurons, it makes sense that the inner workings of your digestive system don’t just help you digest food, but also guide your emotions.

Can we also include that bowel regularity is reported to heavily increases mood for many people.

Mood Swings

What is the Relationship Between Food and Mood? Unhealthy eating patterns can cause mood swings. Blood sugar fluctuations and nutritional imbalances are often to blame.

Eating high-quality foods that contain lots of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants nourishes the brain and protects it from oxidative stress — the “waste” (free radicals) produced when the body uses oxygen, which can damage cells.

If your brain is deprived of good-quality nutrition, or if free radicals’ cells are circulating within the brain’s organ, contributing to brain tissue injury, consequences are to be expected.

If substances get to the brain, it has little ability to get rid of them. The damage is often irreversible.

Diets high in refined sugar, processed foods, and ‘low fuel’ substances are correlated to impaired brain function, and even a worsening of symptoms of mood disorders, such as depression.
